It's official! Transformers is now the biggest HD Disc seller so far. In other words, despite all of the aggressive Blu-ray Disc sales promotions this past week, Transformers sold 190,000 HD-DVD discs, which is the highest and quickest number of sales for a single title so far in either the Blu-ray or HD-DVD format. Although this is a small number of sales when compared to the standard DVD sales of Transformers, it does represent growth in HD-DVD sales. For comparison, the standard DVD version of Transformers is also the biggest seller in the month of October for that format, which is 8.3 million in sales so far. However, with Spiderman 3 coming out on Blu-ray this next week, will Transformers still reign supreme, or will Spidey snare enough Blu-ray Disc sales with his web to surpass the popular metal giants?
My Opinion: Transformers is a fantastic HD-DVD. The image quality is excellent and the audio quality is much better than I expected. It played perfectly on a Toshiba HD-XA1 HD-DVD player, looks great on a Westinghouse LVM-37w3 1080p monitor, and provided a great audio workout for the Onkyo TX-SR875 receiver that I currently have on review loan from Onkyo. However, despite record-breaking sales, the HD-DVD and Blu-ray camps still have a long way to go to even approach the quantity of sales that most standard DVD releases generate, let alone the big numbers piled up by blockbuster standard DVD releases. It will be very interesting to see how the Blu-ray version of Spiderman 3 fares. Stay Tuned...
