According to Video Business, Sony has released sales numbers for the Spiderman 3 Blu-ray Disc. It looks like first week sales of the Spiderman 3 Blu-ray Disc, reached 130,000, which surpases Casino Royale, the previous best seller for Sony. However, it appears that first week sales of Spiderman 3 on Blu-ray did not surpass sales of Paramount's HD-DVD release of Transformers, which generated about 190,000 in unit sales during its first week in release.
My Opinion: Spiderman 3, although not as good as Spiderman 2 in terms of story, is a great looking Blu-ray Disc. Both the image quality and audio soundtrack are excellent. Also, the introductory interactive menu is one of the best I have seen. One thing to note is that on some Blu-ray Disc players you may trouble playing the disc if you don't have the latest firmware update, which can be downloaded from your Blu-ray player's website. Spiderman 3 is available as both a single release, and also as part of the Spiderman Blu-ray Disc Trilogy (see photo top left of this blog entry).
Also, with regards to sales figures for Spiderman 3, as well as other high profile Blu-ray and HD-DVD releases to come, the HD-DVD and Blu-ray camps still have a long way to go to even approach the quantity of sales that most standard DVD releases generate, let alone the big numbers piled up by blockbuster standard DVD releases. It will be interesting to see how upcoming high-profile releases of Shrek on HD-DVD, and the highly anticipated release of Close Enounters of the Third Kind on Blu-ray Disc will do this holiday season. You missed a 1 on the Transformers HD DVD sales figure. Paramount’s Press Release stated sales of 190,000 not 90,000.
Thanks for the head’s up – I have corrected the error.
I got mixed up with Transformers first day sales – which was about 90,000 and their total sales for the week – which was about 190,000 – although some analysts are disputing the figures.
