Blu-ray Camp Claims Significant Sales Lead Over HD-DVD

Thursday December 6, 2007
In the latest round of the Blu-ray/HD-DVD battle, the Blu-ray camp has announced that it has sold a total of 2.7 Million Blu-ray Disc players to date. This number includes both standalone players and the Blu-ray Player equipped Sony PS3 (Playstation 3). For further impact, it has also been claimed that sales of Blu-ray Disc movies were twice that of HD-DVD so far this holiday season. The HD-DVD camp had recently announced that it has sold 750,000 capable players to date.

If these numbers are indeed accurate, then it appears that Blu-ray has a decided market advantage over HD-DVD so far, despite the fact that Blu-ray Disc players are decidedly more expensive than HD-DVD players. However, it must be pointed out that sales of both hi-def disc formats are still a drop-in-the bucket when compared to sales of standard DVDs and DVD players. All it might take is another movie studio to defect to HD-DVD, or more manufacturers bringing Blu-ray/HD-DVD players to market, to tilt the balance.
