First, on the design front, we were shown a prototype 50-inch Plasma display that was an incredible 9mm thin. In addition to the stylish look and space saving factors, the weight of this 50-inch panel was only about 40lbs, which is the weight of many 37-inch LCD sets.
Next, on the pure technology front, we were shown a prototype Plasma set that was capable of producing absolute Black. The implications of this advance were quite obvious when seeing the set in operation: Unlimited contrast ratio, increased color depth, and complete blackness on the screen when no signal is present. In a darkened room, the image actually looks like it is floating on the wall. Although I have included a photo here, it doesn't show the full impact of the images that were shown, including an impressive cut from Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End.
The above advancements are part of Pioneer's KURO project and are expected eventually be included in their KURO Plasma TV lineup - however, no product release dates or pricing was provided. Stay tuned to this site for more CES News this week. Photos (c) Robert Silva -Licensed to About.com
