If Black Friday sales are any indication, the Blu-ray Disc player is emerging as one of the top gift items this Christmas and Holiday Season. With prices as low as $199 for models from Sony and Samsung, and more generic brands selling for even less, it looks like Blu-ray has finally attracted mainstream consumers who have previously shyed away from the high definition format due to high player prices.
Now that manufacturers and retailers seem to be getting the price message on the hardware end, the movie studios could easily cement the Blu-ray format's long term success by lowering actual movie and program disc prices down to a realistic price point of, let's say, $19.99, instead of the $29.99 or higher price of many current releases.
