OPPO Blu-ray Disc Player Being Readied For Introduction

Follow me on:

This past September at the annual CEDIA EXPO in Denver, OPPO gave attendees a sneak peak at their Blu-ray Disc Player prototype, the BDP-83, and provided some initial specifications. As a follow-up OPPO has sent out an email to interested reviewers and others stating that the BDP-83 is in active Beta testing. According to OPPO, the BDP-83 Beta Test units comply with Profile 1.1 (Bonus View) specifications and also include Anchor Bay VRS video processing for standard DVD upscaling, and SACD playback compatibility.

The task being undertaken by OPPO now, is to also include Profile 2.0 (BD Live), on board decoding for DTS-HD Master Audio, and DVD-Audio playback compatibility. These features may be included by the time the product is released to consumers (possibly in January 2009), or added via direct downloadable firmware upgrades. What makes all this significant to the consumer is with Denon just having announced their Profile 2.0, SACD, DVD-Audio compatible flagship Blu-ray Disc player at a $3,800 price point, the OPPO BDP-83 may be offering those features at a much lower $600 or less price point. Stay tuned for more...
