Atlona AT-HDPIX USB to HDMI Converter - Product Review

Thursday June 18, 2009
The Atlona AT-HDPIX USB to HDMI Converter provides a way for users to connect a Desktop or Laptop PC to an HDTV or HD Monitor. Instead of using the PC's VGA monitor output, the software provided with AT-HDPIX enables a USB port to output the PC's video monitor signal. Then, by connecting the provided USB cable, as well as the PC's audio output (cable provided) to the provided AT-HDPIX box, and then connecting an HDMI cable from the box to an HDMI-equipped HDTV, HD-monitor, or Video projector, you can view your Desktop or Laptop on your "big" screen. Does it work? Find out in my Product Review and supplementary Photo Profile. Photos (c) Robert Silva, Licensed to About.com. Click on images for larger view.

While this is a great idea in principle, in practice it seems a little redundant, especially for newer laptops and computers. I have an Asus laptop that is about 3 years old connected to my home theater system using a DVI to HDMI cable for video and a digital TOSlink cable for sound.

The only benefit that I can see is that you can use one cable for both video and sound.

Is there any other reason this would be better?

Hi,

The other benefit wuld be for computers without hdmi output.

Check out this notebook for instance, very light, nice, longer battery life but no HDMI output.
