Panasonic Admits Possible Diminished Plasma Black Levels

By , About.com Guide   February 6, 2010

Follow me on:

One of the advantages of Plasma over LCD touted by manufacturers, press, and consumers over the years is the deeper black levels that Plasma TV technology can produce. However, with increased use of LED backlighting and local dimming, LCD TV technology is definitely catching up. Now, it appears that the black level performance of both Plasma and LCD may be even narrower than commonly thought as Panasonic is now admitting that the initial impressive black levels on its Plasma sets may actually decrease somewhat over time.

Is this revelation really as bad as it sounds for Plasma TV owners? Does this also afffect other brands of Plasma TVs over time as well (LG, Pioneer, Samsung)? Is this really something that consumers should take into consideration when deciding between a Plasma and LCD TV? For additional details and perspective, check out the report from CNET.
