There are actually several ways to hide those ugly cables from sight, but one solution that has caught my attention are the Cable Organizer Kits from DataComm. There are several types of kits available, which give you the choice of just hiding the audio/video cables, or also hide the power cord as well. The kits are inexpensive as well as both easy and very safe to install. If you can mount a flat panel TV on the wall, you have enough skill to use any of the DataComm Cable Organizer Kits. To find out more on whether this cable-hiding option is right for your home theater setup, check out DataComm's Cable Organizer Kit Instructional Videos.

Nice idea but I can’t use them in my home because they violate building codes. The code requires any penetration into a wall or ceiling cavity to be covered at all times such as by switch plates or termination posts on wall plates for Speakers.
It’s a fire code issue because the opening can allow smoke and fire to penetrate studs and insulation paper which can easily catch fire. Yea, most people aren’t going to worry about it but it is a consideration down the road if you want to sell the place.
Check with local code since it varies county by county.
