Earlier this year, I reported that beginning in 2011, the "Analog Sunset" will take place that essentially disables high-definition video access via Component Video connections for Blu-ray Disc players. Now, in a parallel move, the FCC will allow "Selectable Output Control" which allows the disabling of 720p/1080i or 1080p output signals via Component Video outputs from Cable/Satellite boxes. When this disabling can be used will be at the discretion of the movie studios and/or Cable/Satellite services, thus the "Selectable" designation.
What this means is that those consumers that have older HDTVs that do not have HDMI or DVI connections and transfer High Definition signals from HD Cable or Satelllite boxes to an HDTV via Component Video connections, access to High Definition programming may be curtailed.
