Popular DVR maker, TIVO is on hand this year's CEDIA EXPO with a new DVR that is sure get some second takes. The new TIVO Premiere Elite has some impressive features, including four built-in tuners and the ability to record four different programs, while enabling the consumer to watch a fifth, all at the same time. However, it must be noted that the Premiere Elite only works with digital cable systems and is not compatible with either analog cable or over-the-air TV broadcasts.
To support this extensive recording and playback capability, the Premiere Elite comes with a standard two-terabyte hard drive, plus the ability to an external drive(s) for more storage space. The built-in drive allows up to 300 hours of high-definition video recording.
However, the features don't stop there. The Premiere Elite is THX Certified DVR, has custom install control support (including Crestron, Control4, and RTI) via RS-232 interface, and provides networking capability, which allows it to access programming and content streamed from the internet from several popular sources such as Pandora, Hulu Plus, and more (not all internet streaming content can be recorded). With four tuners, why wouldn’t Tivo include OTA as an option? OTA is a viable alternative to cable since reception is equal or better and many people use the plethora of streaming solutions to get the “cable-only” shows for far less money. Unless this is due to pressure from cable companies, this seems to be limited thinking on Tivo’s part.
