2011 Blu-ray Disc Sales up 35% in U.S. Over 2010

Despite the sluggish economy and competition from streaming video and DVD, Blu-ray is not only surviving, but when the final sales totals for 2011 are finalized, Blu-ray Disc sales will show healthy increase of 35% in the U.S. and 42% worldwide when compared to 2010.

Some of the factors that have propelled sales were a series of very high profile releases, the increased packaging of Blu-ray/DVD combo packs, and the availability of low-priced Blu-ray Disc players. As evidenced by current holiday sales, some Blu-ray Disc players are now selling below the $100 price point, only about 30 - 50 dollars more than their DVD cousins.

As the prices between DVD and Blu-ray Disc players converge, and since all Blu-ray Disc players also play DVDs and CDs, as well as many Blu-ray Disc players having the ability to also stream TV and movie content from the internet, there is no longer an incentive for most manufacturers to continue to roll DVD players off the assembly line.
