How to Stream 3D Movies on Vudu

If you have a 3D TV you can watch 3D Movies on Vudu

Vudu, the video-on-demand movie streaming service, can stream 3D movies to select network media players, media streamers, Smart TVs, Blu-ray Disc Players, and video game consoles.

What You Need to Get Vudu 3D

While Vudu was initially offered on its own streaming video device, the company has since made deals with manufacturers to make its platform available on a number of devices. A Vudu app can be found on Samsung and LG smart TVs, Blu-ray disc players, and many home theater components. For more info, check out Vudu's device page.

Note that the original Vudu boxes (no longer available), as well as many Blu-ray players, TVs, and media streamers, do not support Vudu 3D.

Here is a list of everything you need to set up Vudu 3D.

  • A 3D capable TV or video projector.
  • 3D glasses that work with the TV or video projector.
  • A high-speed HDMI cable rated to handle 3D.
  • A TV or other device capable of running the Vudu app. (Again, note that some Blu-ray disc players and the original Vudu device do not support 3D.)
  • A direct connection from the Vudu-enabled device to a 3D TV—if the Vudu app is not available on the TV. This connection can also be run through a 3D capable home theater receiver.
  • Vudu account: There is no subscription fee; rather, users rent or purchase titles. Rentals ranges from $0.99 to $5.99, while purchases typically range from $4.99 to $24.99. Previews are free.
  • An internet connection with speeds over 9 Mb/s.

Follow these steps to browse and watch 3D movies on Vudu.

  1. First, go to the Vudu main page and set up your account. Once you have done that (or if you have an account already), and, depending on your TV or device do the following.

    The 3D item under Features
  5. Choose any title or preview with the "3D" label.

On some TVs and devices, after highlighting movies, you may need to select Collections > Showcases before selecting 3D.

If you don't see the 3D listings, you can also type 3D in the Search field and a listing of available 3D titles will appear. As you select each title, there will be a notice that the 3D version is only available to users with a 3D TV.

If the device you use to access Vudu is not 3D-compatible, you may not be able to view any 3D movie listings.

Streaming 3D Movies in Quality That Rivals Blu-ray

In testing Vudu 3D on a number of devices, the results were consistently impressive. Vudu has been known for high-quality video and audio delivery with its HDX format, which rivals the quality of Blu-ray discs. This is amazing when you consider that the media is streaming to your device rather than playing from physical media.

Of course, the 3D effects are only as good as the 3D effects of a Blu-ray disc. With a few exceptions, most 3D creates a behind-the-screen depth rather than that jump-out-of-the-TV-and-into-your-living-room action. Disney's "The Christmas Carol" is an example where twirling snowflakes indeed seem to float out into the room.

Streaming 3D requires an internet speed of 9 Mb/s or more, so be sure you have a fast connection before attempting to stream in 3D. It's a good idea to take up your player's offer to test your connection prior to streaming the movie or preview, to see if you might encounter any streaming artifacts or buffering

The Bottom Line

If you've been looking for content to enjoy on your 3D TV, Vudu 3D streaming is an option to consider. However, keep in mind that 3D movie titles are rotated in and out on a periodic basis, so if you see one listed that you would like to see, watch it when you can so you don't miss it. As 3D Blu-rays are released, you'll be able to stream the Vudu 3D versions.

The Vudu rental fee of $3.99 and up for a high-quality 3D movie experience is a great alternative to the paltry choice of 3D Blu-ray discs on the retail shelves, which can cost $30 to $40 each. However, you do have the option to purchase an online digital version of 3D movies. Depending on whether the film is an older or newer release, purchase prices vary from $7.99 to $32.99. In some cases, the purchase price may include both the 2D and 3D versions—a great convenience if you can access Vudu on other TVs around the house that may not be 3D compatible.

Vudu provides a quality online video-on-demand viewing experience. If you have a TV, media streamer, or Blu-ray Disc player that is compatible with Vudu 3D streaming, it is a feature worth considering. However, with the discontinuation of 3D TV production, Vudu may at some point discontinue the 3D portion of its streaming service. if you are a 3D fan, take advantage of it while you can.
