Dolby TrueHD, one of the two high-resolution lossless audio formats used in Blu-ray disc releases, moves into the music-only realm with the incorporation of Dolby TrueHD in a new series of music downloads that will be accessible via the the e-Onkyo music service.

Initially, there are will be about 1,000 Dolby TrueHD 5.1 channel mastered music titles that will be available for download. In order to access this content, a user has to go to the e-Onkyo Music website and pay a fee, which is expected to be about $5 per track, or about $40 per album. After downloading the album to a PC hard drive, media server, USB flash drive, or other compatible device, you can play the album back in fully decoded Dolby TrueHD 5.1 channel surround sound, if connected via USB or home network to a compatible home theater receiver (see diagram).

e-Onkyo Music will start offering this new part of their service through their Japanese website beginning on May 30, 2012, with sites for other countries to follow later in the year.

For additional details known so far, read the announcement from Dolby Labs and e-Onkyo.
