Just like the LG 84LM9600, the Sony XBR-84X900 features an 84-inch diagonal screen with a 4K (3840x2160) native pixel resolution. Although LG is now on record as first out the gate with a 4K LCD TV, Sony has been in the 4K game for about a year with its VPL-VW1000ES 4K video projector.
The Sony XBR-84X900 is an LED/LCD TV that utilizes Dynamic Edge Lighting with Local Dimming (rare for an LED edge lit set), Motionflow XR960 processing, and 3D viewing using the passive glasses system (3D viewing resolution is 1080p).
The XBR-84X900 is also fully network capable, featuring both wired Ethernet and WiFi connection options for access to content stored on compatible network devices as well as access to a host of internet-based content via the Sony Entertainment Network. Another bonus is the TV is also Skype-enabled allowing users to make video calls using that big 84-inch screen.
In addition to the video and network capabilities of the XBR-84X900, it also incorporates a 10 speaker audio system (50 watts total output), augmented by Sony S-Force 3D Surround Sound processing.
For custom installation requirements, the XBR-84X900 also provides an RS232 Control interface and is Control4 Certified. Of course, the set can also be controlled by Sony's Media Remote apps for compatible iOS and Android devices.
OK, so this TV is really big, but it is only 3 5/8-inch deep and only weighs a 176 pounds (without stand).
Of course, the remaining question is the price, which should be forthcoming soon (expect something in the $20,000 range or higher).
Update 9/5/12: Sony has announced the U.S. selling price for the XBR-84X900 will be $24,999.99. Start saving your pennies!
