Altec Lansing Debuts Model 5100 Six-Speaker System, Promising ‘Wild Ride’ For PC Game/Desktop Theater Lovers

Powerful 100 Watt PC Surround-Sound Package Features 4 Satellites, 1 Center Speaker, 1 Subwoofer; Speakers Can Also Drive Video Game Systems, TVs, CD/MP3/DVD Players

MILFORD, PA – (August 13, 2002) –

Altec LansingTechnologies, Inc., the long-time leader in the design and manufacture of computer speaker systems, announced today the debut of its 5100 multimedia PC speaker system, a powerful, high-quality package designed for serious PC gamers and video/audio entertainment enthusiasts. Featuring ten high-performance neodymium micro drivers and 4” dual subwoofers for exceptional bass response, the 5100 offers an incredible surround-sound environment for games, movies, music, and more.

“At 50 watts of RMS and 100 watts total system power, the 5100 promises one wild ride,” said Mark Lucas, president and CEO, Altec Lansing. “This new system is a remarkable blend of performance and styling that takes PC entertainment to new levels of excitement. Plus it includes the flexibility and convenience features true sound aficionados look for from a high quality speaker solution.”

Altec Lansing’s new 5100 speaker system is comprised of four satellites, a center speaker for crystal-clear voice reproduction, and a front firing, subwoofer containing two 4-inch long throw woofers. Each satellite, as well as the center speaker, contains two 1-inch neodymium micro drivers—twice as many as competing models. The subwoofer delivers tremendous low frequency response (40 Hz to 180Hz), producing thunderous bass for a truly satisfying audio experience.

Adding to the 5100’s appeal is a handheld digital controller that drives all system functions. Power on/off, mode selector (Stereo x2, 4.1, 5.1), volume controls (master, center, rear), treble, and bass can all be manipulated easily from the controller; a headphone jack is also included for easy headphone connection.

Supports A Variety of Devices

Gamers and audio/video lovers don’t limit themselves to PCs, and neither does the 5100. The highly versatile system also supports CD players, MP3 players, DVD players, video gaming systems, televisions, portable stereos, or any other device with a 3.5 mm line out/headphone jack or RCA left and right outputs. Just plug in to the auxiliary input (video gaming systems require the AAC1 adapter included with the 5100) and any user can get maximum enjoyment from his or her favorite entertainment product. A “center mix” switch ensures virtual surround sound by delivering sound to all satellite speakers, including the center speaker, regardless of audio source.

Tri-Mode Selector Leads Extras

To optimize 5100 output for specific forms of entertainment, the system offers three different listening modes, each configured for the best possible audio response:

· 5.1 Mode—Works with 6-channel sound cards to create incredibly intense gaming and movie sound that puts viewers in the middle of the action;

· 4.1 Mode—Designed for true 4-channel gaming, delivering individual left and right and front and rear sound for the ultimate PC game environment. The center speaker mixes sound from both the left and right front channels, while the subwoofer mixes all four channels;

· Stereo x2—Creates ideal configuration for music listening by delivering left-and-right stereo signals to both front and rear satellites. The center speaker and subwoofer mix sound from both the left and right channels.

Altec Lansing’s 5100 system is as sophisticated on the outside as the inside, thanks to the sleek, contemporary styling of its speakers. The center speaker includes a removable cast-alloy stand with monitor grip that allows placement atop a PC monitor if desired; all other satellites offer matching cast-allow stands, while the subwoofer is enclosed in an attractive solid wood cabinet.

The all-new Altec Lansing 5100 multimedia speaker system is priced to sell between $159.95 and $179.95 at retail, and is available through leading computer retailers and system builders.
