DVD Recorder Advise Needed...

I want to purchase a dvd recorder prior to xmas.....one of my must have's is I need to be able to watch TV and at the same time record on another channel.
I'd like to stay away from Tivo, or is this the only way I can do what I want?
Cost is not really an issue at least to a point. With that being said what brand ie. model number would you suggest.

...As a designer I can see all sorts of possibilities for the plasma television, I do not want to suggest an application to a client that is wrong. I see in various design publications the Plasma above a fireplace. I am worried about the television being harmed, if the heat is deflected with a stone mantel will this application be safe for the TV?

It probably depends on the actual design of the fireplace and whether the wall above the fireplace becomes too warm as the fireplace is in use - however, if it is safe to hang a painting or mirror above the mantel -- it would probably be fine for a Plasma TV.
