From VH:
After I recorded a 35 min show on my Philips 985 (DVD Recorder) in HQ (mode) with the Philips RW (disc) that came with the machine, I tried to play it in my...Panasonic RV32 but it could not read it...I then tried to open door on the Philips, inserted the disk press #2 still didn't work then tried the same and used #3 again no. Can someone please help or give me a suggestion, I have read the compatibility section but to no avail.

FROM THE MAILBOX
From Colin:
Hi, just found your excellent DVD website....I've been after a DVD Recorder for some time now and I saw one that was desperatly cheap so I've just ordered it... It's the Panasonic DMRE50EBS MultiRegion DVD-RAM/R Video Recorder... Thing is after looking at your site I'm wondering if I've made a sound choice... Not sure if DVD-RAM is the way to go...? (memories of Betamax v VHS..) Would I be better off ordering the Phillips DVDR880M...? Could I ask you which one of these units you would buy...?, bearing in mind that I have no special needs for the unit, it is just a replacement for my old Video Recorder...Your opinion is valued...
From Your Guide:
The Panasonic records in two different formats: DVD-R and DVD-RAM -- DVD-R discs can only be recorded on once -- but are playable in most DVD players, DVD-RAM discs can be used over and over again, and can allow you to watch the beginning of your recording while the DVD-RAM disc is still recording the end of the program -- however, DVD-RAM discs cannot play in standard DVD players -- only on the machine that recorded them or another DVD-RAM recorder or some of the more recent DVD players made by Panasonic.

Of all the DVD recording formats, DVD-RAM, although the most versatile within itself -- is the least compatible with standard DVD technology. In addition, if you plan to use your discs just once -- the DVD-R format on the Panasonic will work fine -- however, if you want to use your discs over and over, DVD recorders from Pioneer, Philips, Sony, or Yamaha use either DVD+RW or DVD-RW reusable discs that are playable on most standard DVD Players.
