Dolby 5.1 On The Cheap...
From HardcoreHK9:
Hi, all. I have a cheap bookshelf audio system that is supposedly able to process Dolby 5.1 audio. In order to really get the Dolby effect, though, you've got to plug into 5 discrete inputs, rather than the standard L/R pair for a stereo signal. I've never seen a DVD player or other component that's got 5 plugs coming out of it. Is there a decoder or something that needs to be in between in order to take advantage of the 5.1?

FROM THE MAILBOX
From Chris:
Your articles on televisions have been very helpful, but I do have a couple quick questions for you. I have a digital cable box in the room where I will eventually put a large screen television. My two biggest concerns are:
1) Will the picture on a widescreen television look "stretched out" because its not HDTV even though its hooked up to a digital cable box?
2) I have quite a few DVD's that I bought in full screen versions and want to know how they will look on a widescreen television.
Any information you could provide would be very helpful.
From Your Guide:
In both cases, full screen DVDs and regular TV signals on a widescreen TV will exhibit black bars on the left and right side of the image (unless you set it to the stretch mode yourself).
One note: if you buy a widescreen TV -- make sure it has "orbiting" or a function that vibrates the edges of the image where black lines and the image meet -- this will prevent screen burn-in (the vibration is not visible to your eye).
