FROM THE HOME THEATER FORUM
Need Help Picking A Home Theatre With DVD
From KC163:
I am really frustrated. I have been trying to pick a simple (and cheap of course) home theatre. I'd like at least 500 watts, tuner, receiver with a 5 disc dvd changer - I'd like to have a dvd player that accepts +/- formats as well as wma/jpeg & vcd.

So far I've only been about to find one that does this and it's a Koss unit. the Koss units don't seem to have a great reputation and they have a very limited warranty.

Does anyone know where there's a comparison chart of theatres (or even dvd players & receivers). Or if anyone knows of a make/model.... I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

FROM THE MAILBOX
From J:
I was hoping you could help me out. I have a DVD Recorder and recently purchased a HD Receiver. I know I can't connect the HD Receiver with the DVD Recorder with component video cables. Is there any other way to connect the DVD Recorder to my HD Receiver wihtout losing the great picture of High Def. even if I can't record the HD channels. Thanks in advance.
From Your Guide:
If your DVD recorder does not have Component video inputs your next best choice would be S-Video inputs -- Also, your DVD recorder only has analog audio inputs, so use the analog audio outputs from the HDTV receiver to the corresponding analog audio inputs that are associated with the DVD recorder's S-video inputs.

It must be noted that no current DVD recorder can record in HD-resolution -- you will be recording 480i (standard DVD resolution) -- however, upon playback, most DVD recorders can output in 480p, which is DVD resolution with progressive scan -- check to see if your DVD recorder has this capability. It must also be noted that you must use either the one or two hour recording mode for best video quality. If you use the 4 or 6 hour recording mode, the quality will be more like VHS.

Note: If you are looking for a DVD recorder with component video inputs (standard 480i however) -- check Philips, as most of their models have this capability.

HDTV DVD recorders will start becoming available next year -- but the prices will be quite high for another couple of years.
