PRODUCT OF THE WEEK
JVC DRMV1SL DVD/VCR Combo Recorder
DVD Recorder/VCR combos are becoming very popular. However, the JVC DR-MV1SL may just be a touch above the rest. This unit features dual tuners, which enable to the user to record two separate programs on both the VCR and DVD recorder at the same time. In addition, both the VCR and the DVD recorder share a single progressive scan video output. This means that even VHS tapes can be upscaled to 480p for better quality playback on that new HDTV! The DRMV1SL can record DVDs in the DVD-R/-RW/DVD-RAM formats, and the VCR section is four head HiFi Stereo. This unit also have both analog video and firewire inputs. Before you make a final choice on a DVD recorder, check out this unit.

FROM THE HOME THEATER FORUM
Do You Have A DVD Player Yet?
From RUSHFAN1:
I just got my first dvd player! The prices have come down substantialy, so I figured I couldn't miss with a Koss player under $40. Unfortunately I have to spend upwards of $30 for a RF Modulator. Or I could buy a new TV for over a couple of hundred dollars! I am looking at my options, but I have already purchased a dvd!
I am going to rectify the problem, one way or another. I admit that there is enough information out there about this problem occuring. I think dvd's should come with a warning that they may not cater to older TVs that were VCR compatable. I mean come on, it's like they expect you to buy the 'adapter' after they sell you a useless appliance!

FROM THE MAILBOX
From KK:
I work for a video production company and we are about to distribute DVDs to clients in other countries besides the US. Do we have to code these DVD-Rs or will they play fine in any DVD player that is DVD-R compatible. I know that Hollywood movies are regionally coded, but I didnt know if DVD-R has any issues with foreign DVD players.
From Your Guide:
When you make a DVD-R it is not automatically region coded -- that is a decision that you make and implement either yourself, if you have the technical facilities to do so, or how you instruct the facility that finishes your product.
In addition, in order to protect your copyrights, you have the option of having them anti-copy encrypted.
However, if you are going to be distributing your DVDs around the World, you have to make sure that you master your DVDs destined for Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia (excluding Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan) in the PAL system and that you master DVDs destined for North America and most of South America in the NTSC system. As this is still a major issue in terms of playability.
