Home Theater - Easy and Inexpensive

Additional Options: Digital Sound Projectors, Soundbars, and 3-1 Speakers

By Robert Silva, About.com

In addition to the home theater-in-a-box approach, another option for those that don't want excessive connecting wires or don't have space for separate components and speakers, is the One or Two piece home theater system. These systems come in three categories: Digital Sound Projectors, Surround Bars, and 3-in-1 Speaker Systems.

Digital Sound Projectors

A Digital Sound projector employs technology that utilizes a series of small speakers that can be assigned to various channels and project sound to different points in a room, all within a single cabinet. A digital sound projector houses all needed amplifiers and audio processors, and some also include built-in AM/FM radios and inputs for multiple audio and video components. The surround effect is actually very good, considering everything comes out of one box. The only additional item required might be an external subwoofer. Surround Bars

A Surround Bar is a similar concept which utilizes speaker design and, or various types of virtual surround, or generic surround audio processing, that creates a wider sound field from a single speaker cabinet housing a left, right, and center channel speaker. Surround bars typically need an external amplifier or home theater receiver. The surround effect is not quite as good as a digital sound projector, but is still a viable, cost effective, and space-saving option for many consumers, especially in a smaller room.

3-in-1 Speaker Systems

A 3-in-1 speaker system is single cabinet that incorporates a left, center, and right channel front speaker. 3-in-1 speakers are similar to surround bars, but, depending design, may not have surround sound properties. Such speakers still need amplification from an external source, such as a receiver, as well as extra speakers for surround sound and a subwoofer. However, what makes this option desirable for some is that it decreases "speaker clutter" by combining the three main speakers into one cabinet that can be placed above or below a flat panel television set. Quality of these systems vary, but the concept is very appealing, in terms of style and saving space.

Final Take

Whether a novice looking for that first home theater system, an experienced user looking for a second system for a bedroom or office, or trying to save money on a home theater system in tough economic times, a Home Theater-in-a-Box, Digital Sound Projector, Surround Bar, or 3-in-1 Speaker System might be just the right design and budget solution.
