However, the evolution of DVD isn't stopping. On the previous page I discussed the introduction of DVD Recorder/VCR Combos into the marketplace, which will surely make the transition from VCR to DVD recording must faster. On the other hand, other developments in DVD will also make an impact this year.
The DVD/PC Game Console Combination
Here is an interesting twist on the standard DVD player. Apex unveiled its new ApeXtreme Game Console at this year's CES (for which they won the TechTV award for best home audio/video product). The ApeXtreme is a DVD player combined with a PC games console which is compatible for the playing of PC games on a standard TV. The unit is basically a full functioning DVD player, with all the features you would expect, such as DVD/CD compatibility, digital audio outputs, and a host of video output options, including DVI.
However, this product also comes equipped with a Windows operating system, a 1.2GHZ processor, 40GB hard drive, 4-front mounted USB ports, and built-in networking capability. This product will certainly appeal to the veteran PC gamer, as it brings PC games to the world of home theater. This may be just the ticket for the growing number of DVDs that also have sample PC games on them. The price of the ApeXtreme is expected to be around $399 and should be on store shelves later this year.
