Toshiba Announces The Next-Generation DVD Format Endorsement By Major Hollywood Studios
While Sony's Blu-Ray high definition DVD format seems to have the edge in hardware support, Toshiba's HD-DVD format could end up with the prize and more Hollywood Studios, including New Line and Paramount, jump on board the HD-DVD bandwagon with committments for software support. Cambridge Professor Debuts New WEDGE LCD
LCD and Plasma TVs are pretty thin, but not thin enough, according to one professor at Cambridge University in the U.K., who has developed a revolutionary video projection system that may be very practical and useful in a variety of situations. Basically, this system utilizes a video projector placed at one end of a "wedge", which, in turn projects and image that is bounced back and forth up the wedge until reaches the screen. Since the set up is vertical in nature, this type of system can be made thinner that even todays's Plasma and LCD televisions. British Retailer To Discontinue Sales Of VCRs
It had to happen sooner or later. Even though there are still millions of VHS VCRs in use throughout the World, the rapid accaeptance of DVD players, and now DVD recorders, is finally sealing the fate of the one dominant video format. With the end of the VCR within sight, Dixons, a popular British consumer electronics retailer, appears to be the first to announce that it will discontinue selling VHS VCRs at its stores by the end of the year. Sharp Unveils Blu-ray Disc Recorder
Although high definition DVD recorders have yet to reach store shelves in the U.S., Sharp becomes the third company, behind Sony and Matsushita, to market a Blu-Ray high definition DVD recorder in Japan. For all the details, check out the report from EE Times.

Slimmer Tube TVs to Challenge Flat Panels
So, you think that Plasma and LCD flat panel televisions are going to make the ol' tube set obsolete? No so fast. Samsung as well as the LG/Philips partnership have developed a new CRT technology that can make picture tubes almost as slim as many Plasma and LCD televisions. The implication of such a development in the market may be significant, given that:

1. LCD and Plasma technology are still maturing while in CRT technology is quite established.

2. While LCD and Plasma require expensive and new manufacturing facilities, little retooling or new production facilities are needed to produce the new slimmer CRTs, thus keeping costs for both the manufacturer and consumer low.

Syntax Introduces New LCD and LCOS Televisions
Syntax, the pioneer in budget-priced LCD televisions, has just announced the pending release of two new models. The 32-Inch LT32HV and the 37-inch LT37HV, priced at $1,999 and $2,999, respectively, bring large screen LCD television to the masses. Both units are fully HDTV-compatible with 1366x768 fixed pixel resolution, with a 1,200:1 contrast ratio. Also featured are DVI-HDCP inputs for HD sources, as well as Progessive scan component inputs and Dual-NTSC tuners.
