Introduction:
The Yamaha HTR-5930 offers 5.1 channel surround sound processing, HDTV capable component video switching and is XM Radio ready. The Yamaha HTR-5930 is currently available and has an MSRP of $199.
Video and Audio Inputs:
The Yamaha HTR-5930 offers
component video switching and can switch three high definition and
progressive-scan sources without degrading video quality. There are four
composite RCA video inputs. The receiver has three digital audio inputs (one
coaxial and two
optical), RCA audio connections for a CD player and CD or Cassette audio recorder, and a subwoofer preamplifier output. In addition, the HTR-5390 also has a dedicated 5-channel direct input that can be used when needing to access the multi-channel audio output from an
SACD or
DVD-Audio Player.
Video Outputs:
The Yamaha HTR-5390 offers two types of video monitor output: Component and Composite. You may need to connect both types to your television as the HTR-5390 does not have composite to component video conversion. In other words, to view your VCR on your TV, you need to use the composite video monitor connection. However, for a DVD player or other source that has component video connections, use the component video monitor output to your TV. If your TV has both types, you simply switch between the two with your TV remote to access the proper video monitor output signal from the HTR-5930.
Audio Features - Part One:
The HTR-5930 features several surround sound processing options, including:
Dolby Digital 5.1,
DTS, and
Dolby ProLogic II. Dolby Prologic II processing enables the htr-5930 to extract 5.1-channel audio from absolutely any stereo or multichannel source. In addition, Yamaha provide additional surround modes that can be used in conjunction with both Dolby Digital and DTS.
Audio Features - Part Two:
Although the HTR-5930 is a 5.1 channel receiver, it is compatible with Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES 6.1 channel programming; the Receiver simply mixes down the 6.1 channel information into its 5.1 channel soundfield. The receiver features also features linear
PCM 192 kHz/24-bit D/A (Digtal-to-Analog) converters.
The HTR-5930 also has a dedicated audio line output for a powered subwoofer.
In addition to its surround capabilities, the HTR-5930 can also be used in a standard 2-channel stereo operation, and, unlike many budget-price home theater receivers, the HTR-5930 provides very good two-channel stereo performance.
Amplifier Characteristics:
The yamaha HTR-5930 delivers about 80 Watts per channel into 8-Ohms (From 20 to 20KHZ) via its five internal high-current power amplifiers. With amplifier frequency response from 10 Hz to 100 kHz the HTR-5930 is up to challenge from any source, including SACD and DVD-Audio.
Speaker Connections:
Speaker connections consist of dual banana-plug-compatible multi-way speaker binding posts for all main channels with color-coding for simplified wiring. Front channel "B" speaker terminals also enable the receiver to drive a stereo pair in another room, if desired.
Front Panel Display:
The fluorescent front panel display makes setup and operation of the receiver easy and fast. The Front panel display shows the the status of your surround and other settings, such as which inputs are active and what type of audio signal is coming from source (Mono, Stereo, Surround).
FM/AM Radio Tuner:
The HTR-5930 has a built-in AM/FM tuner section has 40 random presets, and FM automatic scan tuning. Connections for both AM and FM antennas are provided.
Wireless Remote Control:
The HTR-5930 comes with a pre-set Universal Wireless Remote Control that is compatible with most Televisions, VCRs, and DVD Players. A list is provided in the user manual that includes the codes to set the remote for use with other devices.
XM Satellite Radio Ready:
The HTR-5930 is also XM-ready. By connecting an XM Satellite Radio Antenna (must be purchased separately) to the HTR-5930 and paying the XM monthly subscription fee, you can access XM Satellite Radio Programming. If you are not familiar with Satellite radio, think of it as being similar to Satellite TV, without having to use an outside dish (although placement of the XM Radio Antenna near a window improves the consistency of reception.
Final Take:
With the HTR-5930, Yamaha has provided an excellent feature package and performance in an entry-level Receiver. The HTR-5930 is equally at home in both the music-only and DVD movie environments. Also, if you have an HDTV, the HTR-5930's component video inputs and outputs are fully compatible with progressive scan and HD video signals using the component video interface.
It must be noted, however, that the HTR-5930 does not have S-video, DVI, or HDMI connectivity. For higher-end users, the lack of these features may be a consideration.
However, whether you are a novice looking to purchase your first home theater receiver, or are planning to purchase a basic home theater receiver for a second system, then be sure to check out the HTR-5930. It has a solid foundation of features and performance.
