Introduction - The Blu-ray Format:

The Blu-ray format is one of two competing high-definition DVD formats that is available to consumers (HD-DVD is the other format, which is backed by Toshiba). Sony is the main backer of Blu-ray, with Samsung being one of the Blu-ray partners. Both systems utilize new Blue Laser and video compression technology to achieve high definition video playback on the same size disc as a standard DVD.

The Samsung BD-P1000:

The BD-P1000 is the first Blu-ray player from Samsung, and the first Blu-ray player to reach the U.S. market. Utilizing the Blu-ray format allows for true high-definition (720p, 1080i. 1080p) playback of new Blu-ray discs. In addition, the Samsung BD-P1000 can play back standard DVDs in an upscaled setting. To find out more about the Samsung BD-P1000, check out the rest of this Product Preview.

Video Playback Compatibility:

The BD-P1000 plays back Blu-ray discs, as well as standard DVD-Video, DVD-R/-RW, and DVD-RAM discs (DVD+R/+RW discs may not always play).

Via the BD-P1000's HDMI output, standard DVDs can be upscaled to match the 720p, 1080i, or 1080p native resolution of HDTV's, providing the best possible image from standard DVDs.

Standard DVD playback is limited to the DVD region where the unit is purchased (Region 1 for Canada and U.S.). There is also a separate Region Code system for Blu-ray Discs..

Audio Playback Compatibility:

In addition to its video playback capabilities, the Samsung BD-P1000 can also playback standard CDs, as well as standard CD-R and CD-RW audio discs.

The Samsung BD-P1000 also features uncompressed multi-channel PCM output, as well as standard Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1.

Video Connection Options:

High definition outputs: HDMI (hi-def video and uncompressed digital audio), DVI-HDCP video output compatibility with adapter.

NOTE: 1080p can only be accessed via HDMI outputs, however, 720p and 1080i output resolutions for Blu-ray discs can also be accessed via the Component video outputs. For more information on accessing 1080p, read my article 1080p and You

Standard definition video outputs include: Component Video (progressive or interlaced), S-Video, and standard composite video.

Audio Outputs:

Audio outputs include: 5.1 channel direct analog, two channel analog, digital optical, and digital coaxial outputs.

NOTE: The BD-P1000's 5.1 channel analog outputs will not decode Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS soundtracks on standard DVDs, only DTS-HD or Dolby Digital Plus audio present on Blu-ray discs.

To access Dolby Digital or DTS audio from standard DVDs, you must use either the digital optical or digital coaxial audio connection from the BD-P1000 to your AV receiver, if it has these options.

Additional Input Option:

Another input option included by Samsung is a Digital Camera card reader that can accommodate all of the following card formats: MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital Card, Compact Flash, Microdrive, xD-Picture Card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo, reduced-size MultiMediaCard and Mini Secure Digital with adapter (not included).

The Card Reader feature allows the consumer to display digital photos from their cards in true high definition resolution.

Control Options:

The Samsung BD-P1000 has easy control, via wireless remote and onscreen menus, of the following parameters: Aspect ratio, 720p/1080i/1080p output selection, Resume Play, and any Disc navigation functions that are present - such as subtitles, audio preferences, interactive menu selections, etc...

The Samsung BD-P1000 does not take quite as long a time to boot up, load, and recognize a disc, as do the HD-DVD players from Toshiba. However, load time is still much longer than a standard DVD player.

Accessing High Definition Content:

Depending on disc encoding, high definition output may only be accessible via the HDMI output.

However, if the disc does not contain the complete copy-protection scheme, it may allow output at 720p or 1080i resolution to be accessible via the component video outputs as well. 1080p resolution can only be accessed via the HDMI output.

Access to high-definition output from an Blu-ray player via both the HDMI and Component Video outputs is determined by each studio on a case-by-case basis.

Perspective and Outlook for the Samsung BD-P1000:

The Samsung BD-P1000 is the first entry by the Blu-ray Disc camp into the market, a full two months behind Toshiba's release of the HD-DVD format. Like the Toshiba HD-A1 and HD-XA1 HD-DVD players, the Samsung BD-P1000 is backwards compatible with standard DVDs, as well as most recordable DVD formats, and most audio CD formats, including CD-R/-RWs.

Just as with Toshiba's HD-DVD players, BD-P1000 Blu-ray player incorporates uncompressed PCM Multi-channel audio output, in addition to Dolby Digital and DTS, which can greatly expand the audio performance of the home theater experience.

However, despite all the benefits of Blu-ray and the capabilities of the Samsung BD-P1000, the decision as to whether to jump in now or wait and see what happens as the Blu-ray/HD-DVD war plays itself out, presents a real challenge to the average consumer, especially with the first crop of Blu-ray players expected to sell for $999 or more.

Questions, such as software availability and format viability over the long term, is a real concern at this point. On the positive side, both Blu-ray and HD-DVD players are totally compatible with the standard DVD format, as well as CDs. However, if, down the road, your Blu-ray or HD-DVD player is no longer useful and the rival format is the only one left, you will not be able to play your Blu-ray or HD-DVD discs on the rival format's machine.

New tech toys are hard to resist, and if you are willing to take the plunge into high definition DVD, despite future uncertainty, then consider the Samsung BD-P1000 as a possible choice. One way to look at it is, instead of waiting, you can be enjoying true hi-definition DVD right how with the Samsung BD-P1000, especially if you have a large screen HDTV or HD-Compatible video projector.

Availability - Pricing:
