This photo shows a close-up view of the connections on the Toshiba XD-E500. Starting from left to right, is the Digital Optical audio connection.

Moving right is the HDMI connection. This connection has the ability to transfer video in pure digital form to an HDMI equipped HDTV. HDMI access the 720p, 1080i, 1080p upscaled images from standard commercial DVD. In addition, the HDMI connection passes both Audio and Video. This means on TV's with HDMI connections, you only need one cable to pass both audio and video to the television, or through an HDMI receiver with both HDMI video and audio accessibility. If your TV has a DVI-HDCP input instead of HDMI, you can use an HDMI to DVI Adapter cable to connect the DV-983H to a DVI-equipped HDTV.

The yellow connection is the Composite, or standard analog video output. Just below the Composite video output is the S-Video output. If you have an HDTV the composite or S-video connections are not required or advisable as they cannot passed upscscaled or progressive scan video.

Next, along the top is the Component Video output. This output consists of Red, Green, and Blue connectors. These connectors plug into the same type of connectors on a TV, Video Projector, or AV receiver. NOTE: The Component video connections, while able to output progressive scan video, can only output upscaled video for non-commericial home-recorded DVDs.

Just below the Component video connections are the analog stereo audio connections (red and white), and, to the right of those, is the Digital Coaxial audio connection. The XD-E500 features both a Digital Coaxial and Digital Optical audio connection. Either connection can be used. Check your Home Theater Receiver for the type that you have access to. NOTE: In order to access Dolby Digital or DTS surround sound, you must use either the Digital Optical or Digital Coaxial audio connection to your home theater receiver.

It must be noted that the XD-E500 (or any other DVD Player) does not have an RF antenna/cable output connection. If you want to use the DVD Player with an older TV that only has an antenna/cable connection, you must purchase an RF Modulator, that can convert the Standard Audio and Video output from the DVD player to an RF Signal, that can be passed to the antenna/cable connection on an older television. However, if you don't have an HDTV with an HDMI connection, you should consider a different DVD player than the XD-E500.
