The Bottom Line

Overall, I found that the Sennheiser PXC-450 headphones offer an interesting full-size alternative to in-the-ear headphones, that can be used both at home or on-the-road, as well as offering an excellent noise cancellation function. However, the PXC-450 does not provide standout audio performance for the serious listener, especially for the high price.

Guide Review - Sennheiser PXC-450 Noise Canceling Travel Headphones - Product Review

In using the Sennheiser PXC-450, I found that mid-range vocals very good, as well as the highs. However, the lower frequencies were weaker that I would expected with full size headphones from Sennheiser, especially when compared to classic Koss 4AAA full-size headphones and the Shure E3c compact stereo earphones that I used for comparison - both of which easily outperformed the PXC-450, with regards to low frequency response on challenging music tracks, such Medeski, Martin, and Wood's Uninvisible, Heart's Magic Man, and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. I found that I need to turn up the bass level up several decibel notches on my receiver to get the same low frequency response on the 450's than with the comparison headphones used.

In terms of Stereo and Surround imaging (using the Silent Cinema function on the Yamaha HTR-5490 Receiver), the PXC-450 actually did very well, and was easily on par with the comparison headphones used, except for lower end frequency output levels.

In addition, the PXC-450 does offer some practical features:

First - It is a full-size headphone that fits very comfortably over your entire ears and can be worn for extended periods of time without discomfort.

Second - Even though the headphones are rather large for traveling, they fold up very nicely and come with a travel case.

Third - The PXC-450 has a Switchable noise cancellation circuit that decreases exterior noise significantly.

Taking in all factors, I give the Sennheiser PXC-450 a rating of 3.5 Stars out of 5.
