By , About.com Guide

Definition: In home theater and stereo system applications, a power amplifier is a type of amplifier that supplies power to a speaker or speakers, but does not have any other functions, except for a master gain control (gain is analogous to volume). In other to provide further control, such as surround sound processing, bass and treble control, and input selection, for a power amplifier, a preamplifier must be used.
