The way that Aperion pulls this off is that each speaker (and the subwoofer) all contain built-in amplifiers as well as a wireless receiver. However, one thing that must be pointed out is that although the speakers in this system receive signals wirelessly, they each still need to be connected to an AC outlet in order to provide the needed power to their built-in amplifiers.
Also, in addition to speakers, the Intimus 4T also comes with a preamp/transmitter made by Summit Wireless (see photo). The preamp/transmitter is very compact, since all it needs are source inputs and preamp/processing functions. The preamp processor/transmitter has both analog and digital audio inputs, digital audio decoding including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and even three 3D-compatible HDMI inputs and one HDMI output. If you are not using HDMI for audio, the preamp/processor also has digital optical, digital coaxial, and analog stereo inputs. In other words, you don't need an additional home theater receiver for most source devices.
A remote control is provided to aid setup and use of this system. Setting up the Aperion/Summit Wireless system is easy: Just place the speakers in the room where you want them, press My Zone button on the remote control from your listening position, and the Summit Wireless unit will identify where the speakers are, assign each speaker to the proper channel, determine the distance to your listening position, and set optimum speaker levels for a properly balanced listening experience. The setup sequence can be repeated for any listening position you choose.
At past CES and CEDIA tradeshows, I have had the chance to check out pre-production versions of both the Summit Wireless system and the Summit Wireless system incorporated into the Aperion speaker setup and I must say, I was impressed with what I saw and heard. These speakers are definitely an advance in providing a wireless speaker solution suitable for home theater application.
