Since the LEDs no longer need to serve as backlights for an LCD layer, and are each assigned a specific primary color, they are moved up to the front of the screen and actually display a TV image directly as pixels, similar to those giant LED scoreboards and signage you see in stadiums and other commercial venues, but with much finer detail, color, and black levels.
However, don't expect to see this TV on store shelves anytime soon, as Sony was very public about this being a prototype demonstration only. However, if LG and Samsung fail to get their OLED TVs on the market successfully, Sony may have just the thing waiting in the wings. We may find out by next years' CES.
