Sony RDR-HX900 DVD Recorder - Product Of The Week
Sunday December 26, 2004
If you are looking for a DVD recorder that just about has it all, then you have to check out the Sony RDR-HX900. First of all, this DVD recorder can record in four DVD formats: DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW. Second, the HX900 also has a 160GB hard drive that gives the user the flexibility of storing large amounts of video before having to dub it to DVD. In addition, the HX900 features a built-in TV tuner with satellite and cable box control as well as the TV Guide programming system. Adding other features such as Firewire and analog video inputs with complete progressive scan playback output makes this unit a keeper. Just select your source, choose to record to the hard drive or DVD, press record, and you are set to go. At $799, you might think that the HX900 is a little expensive. However, after using several DVD recorders, I found that its combination of features and performance fills the bill.

This is the simplest way to record DVD’s, and it still works for me in 2008. I’m so sorry Sony isn’t making harddrive DVD recorders anymore. The harddrive is essential to making good DVD’s as you can do some editing first. BTW, although 16x DVD-R’s can’t be recorded in this unit, 16x DVD+R’s work fine. DVD+R is a better format anyway. They will last longer because of extra reliability features. The only reason to use DVD-R’s is for compatibility with players made before 2002. Also with DVD+R’s, you can dub from the DVD back onto the harddrive using the RDR-HX900.
