Pioneer Elite KURO PRO-141FD Plasma Monitor - Product of the Week

Friday April 24, 2009
It was a sad day earlier this year when Pioneer announced that it was leaving the Plasma Television business, but it is leaving with a bang with its limited-release top-of-line $7,000 (suggested price) PRO-141FD Signature Series Plasma Monitor. Designed for the custom installation market, the PRO-141FD is a monitor style unit (no tuners or stand) which has a 60-inch 16x9 aspect ratio screen, 1080p native pixel resolution, 4 HDMI inputs, 1 DVI input, very thin 2.5" depth, and provides open architecture for incorporation into a variety of custom control setups.

However, the most impressive thing about the PRO-141FD is its excellent black level performance. In other words, this set provides an almost unlimited contrast ratio that produces stellar color and detail that is almost perfect. Having viewed both prototypes and production Pioneer Plasmas over the years, I have seen their evolution first hand. Pioneer plasmas will be missed both as a benchmark for television performance, and by custom installers that want to provide the best for their clients.

The PRO-141FD may seem like a hard sell in this tough economic time, but is worth the cash. If you are considering a custom home theater installation, you should definitely check out the Pioneer Elite KURO PRO-141FD Plasma Television for inclusion, while it is still available. I’m starting to see two different approaches by on-line merchants to this panel. While on the one hand the is (was) arguably the finest plasma TV on the market, no merchant can afford to be sentimental with inventory. Therefore, they’re selling these sets at rock bottom prices to get them out the door ASAP. For example, a store called bestbuypcs.com is selling Kuro PRO-141FD at significant discount.

On the other hand, thinking about store profits, other merchants are sensing there is a huge opportunity to make money selling a precious commodity in an era of (still) high demand and dwindling supply. Here’s a retailer that has actually raised its price by $500 on the Kuro since it came out.

Not sure how long this will all last but it is safe to say that it is the end of an era. I personally detest the murky brown/grey mess that substitutes for “black” on LCD. Until we get our SED or OLED panels, I think I’m buying the biggest Kuro I can find…and wait until the prices look like it truly is “last call.”
