Seagate FreeAgentGo 500GB Portable Hard Drive Pre-loaded with Paramount Films - Product of the Week

Non-disc-based audio/video content, whether downloaded or streamed directly from the internet or stored on memory cards, flash drives, or hard drives is continuing to gain popularity. Jumping on this opportunity, Paramount has partnered with Seagate to include 20 of its recent home video film releases, including Star Trek on a special edition of Seagate's 500GB FreeAgentGo Ultra-Portable hard drive.

After the consumer purchases the specially-labeled hard drive and registers it, they will be given a coupon code that will unlock Star Trek for free. The additional movies can be unlocked with a purchase fee. After a movie is unlocked, it can either be viewed on a PC, Laptop, or placed in a Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ Media Extender/Player and viewed in 1080p on an HDTV.

It is important to note that your PC needs to comply with several requirements, including Windows XP or Higher, Windows Media Player 10 or higher, and you must have internet access via Windows Internet Explorer 7 or higher. Also, if your PC has previously installed media player/extender software, there may be some conflicts with the DRM (Digital Rights Management) codes embedded in the movies that may require tech support. In addition, although the movies are encoded at 1080p, they do not look as good on a large screen 1080p HDTV as they would if they were played directly from a Blu-ray Disc source.

However, that being said, Paramount and Seagate may be onto a solid content distribution and marketing concept that other studios and program providers may find practical.
