Dolby Atmos Blu-ray Disc Releases

Find Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with this sound technology

Dolby Atmos is a surround-sound technology that provides more sound presentation flexibility in a movie or home theater space. Its immersive sound technology goes beyond the limitations of traditional 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound channels, including adding overhead sound with in-ceiling or vertically firing speakers. Here's a look at products that support this immersive audio format as well as Dolby Atmos Blu-ray Disc titles.

Products That Feature Dolby Atmos

Since its introduction in 2014, most mid-range and high-end home theater receivers include Dolby Atmos decoding. Dolby Atmos is also available on select soundbars from Creative Labs, Integra, LG, Onkyo, Pioneer, Samsung, Sony, Yamaha, and Vizio.

LG also includes a built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar with select OLED TVs. Although not quite the same experience as having a multi-speaker Dolby Atmos speaker setup, a Dolby Atmos soundbar brings a taste of its benefits to more consumers.

Most Blu-ray Disc players are compatible with Dolby Atmos, and it's possible to stream Dolby Atmos audio over the internet.

Final Thoughts

Dolby Atmos elevates the home theater experience, and there's plenty of content available. Still, take these notes into consideration:

  • Some films are released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with a Dolby Atmos sound mix but don't provide a Dolby Atmos mix on the standard Blu-ray version, opting instead for a DTS-HD Master Audio mix. This is a disappointment for those with a strong commitment to Blu-ray but who haven't upgraded to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.
  • Competing technologies like Auro Audio and DTS offer their own immersive surround-sound formats. Studios sometimes must decide between Dolby Atmos or another immersive audio format.
  • For 3D fans who view content on 3D Blu-ray discs, Dolby Atmos may be offered on the 2D Blu-ray version of the title but not necessarily on the 3D Blu-ray version. Note the disc specifications on the product packaging.
  • The DVD format doesn't support Dolby Atmos.
