It is hard to believe that the first decade of the 21st century is almost at a close. It has been a significant decade not just in world events, but in the plethora of technical advances that have made our lives both more complex and convenient (depending on your perspective). A DECADE & HT KEEPS GETTING BETTER
- Two major items stand out for the decade past. #1- has to be Blu-Ray high definition video and sound for watching movies. #2- is Speaker design. Years ago, speakers had to be HUGE to be good (referring to Altec-Lansing's "Voice of Theater" and Klipsch 'K-horn' speakers. The Altec's had a 20" woofer with 20lb. magnets and 17" cast aluminum horn weighing nearly 50# if memory serves. Klipsch used a folded horn design which reduced size, bringing in an overall speaker about 2/3rds size of Altecs 30"w x 60"h x 24" box. These speakers demanded quality receivers like Macintosh and Marantz as they 'DETAILED" every sound thrown at them with an efficiency that didn't require serious watts (150w amps never go half way up or they would open an unlatched door). TODAY? We have speakers from Klipsch, Mirage, & Energy to name a few, having speakers smaller than 5"x12"x5" filling rooms with tunes efficiently from 50w amps (see Robert's articles on amp vs speakers), showing how far we have come
